DESTINY OWENS

 

Destiny D. Owens is from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She is a 2016 graduate of North Carolina Central University where she attained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and another Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication with a focus in Journalism and Media Studies. She has a thorough background in writing, historical scholarly research, and documentary film work.

 

She has documented her grandmother’s time as a student activist in the late 60s as a student activist in Durham while she and her classmates attended what was then North Carolina College at Durham (North Carolina Central University). She has worked on many projects that focus on minority communities such as a project about Muslims and what their religion means to them in a well-known mosque in Durham NC. She has also completed community projects in Washington DC and Maryland such as a community voice project for the Anacostia Museum and small video projects documenting the work done with and for kids at the Suitland Community Center.

 

Her most recent project is her thesis film about the importance of community and community centers in African American communities set to be released in the Summer of 2018.

 

She is extremely passionate about history, community and storytelling. She is currently enrolled in the MFA Film and Electronic Media program at American University, scheduled to graduate in May 2018.
